In 2023, Capcom made quite the entrance on our screens, like a mysterious vendor with a flair for drama, asking, “What’cha buying?” The answer for many turned out to be the Resident Evil 4 Remake, which has impressively sold over 10 million copies globally. That’s no small feat!
This modern reimagining of the iconic third-person survival horror game is the latest in Capcom’s series of loving tributes to their legendary horror franchise. The original Resident Evil 4, which steered the series toward a more action-oriented vibe back in 2005, continues to captivate gamers nearly twenty years later. The remake, with its upgraded graphics and some clever tweaks, has proven to be a phenomenal hit for the Japanese gaming powerhouse.
Capcom’s Japanese website proudly announced this sales milestone, noting that the Resident Evil 4 Remake is the fastest in the series’ history to hit such impressive numbers. Furthermore, it was highlighted that Resident Evil 7 and the 2019 Resident Evil 2 Remake have collectively surpassed 15 million units sold. Meanwhile, Resident Evil Village has surged past 11 million units, and my personal pick, the Resident Evil 3 Remake, has also broken the 10 million units sold mark.
As we look forward, the future of Resident Evil is intriguing. Capcom seems keen on balancing new additions to the franchise with remakes of beloved classics. There’s growing speculation about a Resident Evil 5 remake, given its action-heavy style, and it seems many are hopeful for more horror-rooted experiences in the original titles that cater to both veteran enthusiasts and newcomers.
While it makes sense for Capcom to focus on the more popular mainline games, there’s also a case for revisiting some of the less mainstream titles. Code Veronica holds a special place in fans’ hearts, and Resident Evil 0 with its unique dual protagonist mechanic could benefit from a fresh coat of paint.
Ultimately, wherever Capcom decides to take the series next, fans appear ready and eager for the ride. Resident Evil stands strong as a juggernaut of a gaming franchise, and as long as Capcom continues to deliver on quality, there seems to be no stopping its success.
