To access the video content along with this review, you might need to verify your age as it’s packed with mature content.
Originally making its debut on the Xbox 360 back in 2008, NINJA GAIDEN 2 later arrived on PlayStation 3 as NINJA GAIDEN 2 Sigma in 2009, with a follow-up release on PlayStation Vita in 2013. Fast forward to 2025, and we are thrilled to explore this remastered version. It’s a seamless blend of NINJA GAIDEN 2 and NINJA GAIDEN 2 Sigma, now optimized for a fresh experience on the PlayStation 5.
Engage in intense battles that demand constant vigilance as you slash through various stages. This Rated M for Mature game ensures an adrenaline-packed ride. Control Ryu Hayabusa with the left stick, while the right stick manipulates your view. Jump using the X button, execute quick attacks with Square, and unleash powerful blows with Triangle. As you progress, you’ll unlock a variety of combos and techniques that make combat increasingly dynamic. Blocking attacks with L1 is crucial, bringing to mind similarities with titles like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta.
Utilize the Circle button to throw shurikens and gain a tactical edge, though enemy defenses might require a varied approach to avoid repetitive tactics. Projectile weapons come into play with R2, but for accurate shots, aim first with L2. The D-Pad swiftly accesses melee weapons, items, ninpo, and projectiles, while holding R1 highlights your navigation path.
As you advance, new ninja techniques become available through scrolls or items. Initially, you’ll find the Shadowless Footsteps technique, allowing Ryu to run along walls. Then there’s the Obliteration technique for finishing off severely wounded enemies, and the Reverse Wind technique, enabling quick dodges.
Your adventure continues as you discover the Art of Inferno, a fiery ninpo attack launched with Triangle and Circle, depleting your Ki gauge. Red essence restores Ki, while scrolls grant the Flying Bird technique for agile wall-leaping. The Flying Swallow lets you strike enemies from above—an invaluable skill in your arsenal.
Dragon Statues offer a respite, healing wounds and saving progress when it’s safe. Their blue light indicates healing availability, turning to a white glow once used. Manage your health by collecting blue essence or using healing items, crucial for survival as foes relentlessly pursue you, even resorting to sacrificing themselves in explosive attacks!
Defeating enemies often results in gathering red, blue, and yellow essence. Yellow essence doubles as currency at the Muramasa Shop. Upgrade weapons like the Dragon Sword or Lunar Staff, and purchase items such as Herbs of Spiritual Life and Devil’s Way Mushrooms to enhance your abilities.
Trophies in this remastered edition offer a robust challenge. With 24 Bronze, 9 Silver, 4 Gold trophies, and a coveted platinum trophy, there’s plenty to achieve. Mastering secret ninja techniques, completing specific game chapters, and tackling various difficulty levels are just part of the journey. Additionally, defeating enemies with different characters such as Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel, alongside completing all Tag Missions, contribute to the extensive trophy hunt.
NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black, now revamped for the PlayStation 5, provides a thrilling revisitation of this classic, priced at $49.99. Whether you’re a returning fan or new to the series, this edition promises a challenging yet rewarding experience.
