When Lenovo first introduced its original Legion Go gaming handheld back in mid-2023, it didn’t exactly make waves, with the reception being relatively lukewarm. Fast forward to 2025, Lenovo isn’t backing down and is re-entering the gaming arena with three new models. These come equipped with either the trusty AMD Z1 Extreme processor or the newly introduced Z2.
Now, let’s dive into the details of these exciting releases. First up, we have the Legion Go S, which gives you the flexibility to choose your operating system—either SteamOS or Windows 11. Lenovo has made some noticeable changes this time around. In departing from the detachable controllers of its predecessor, the new Legion Go S adopts a more conventional and lighter build, weighing in at just 1.63 pounds. If you’re a fan of sleek aesthetics, you might be drawn to the white model that operates on Windows 11. But if you’re leaning towards a gaming experience that mimics a console, the “Nebula Violet” version with Valve’s SteamOS might catch your eye. Do keep in mind, though, that this choice steers you towards Valve’s ecosystem for game purchases and usage.
Both variants, aptly named the Legion Go S and Legion Go S – Powered by SteamOS, aren’t skimping on specs. They rock the same hardware—a pick between the Z2 or the original Z1 Extreme processor, an 8-inch 1920×1200 LCD touchscreen which boasts a brightness of 500 nits and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. You’ll also find a solid 55.5 WHr battery and memory configurations reaching up to 32GB of speedy 6400 DDR5 RAM, paired with as much as 1TB of storage space. And for those who might need even more room, there’s support for standard-sized 2280 M.2 SSDs.
You’ll find a variety of ports to suit your needs, including a MicroSD card slot, two USB 4.0 ports positioned up top, and an audio jack. As for those looking to snap one up soon, Lenovo has shared some pricing info. The Windows-powered Legion Go S will make its debut in January, starting around $729, whereas the SteamOS variant will hit the shelves in May with a more affordable price tag of about $499. However, expect more configurations of the Windows model in May 2025, starting at approximately $599. According to one Lenovo representative, you should be able to grab a Legion Go S, whether it’s running on Windows or SteamOS, packed with the same AMD Z2 Go CPU, 16GB RAM, and a 1TB storage drive, for $599. Meanwhile, the $729 version on Windows will offer an impressive 32GB of RAM.
On a slightly different note, Lenovo is also teasing a prototype that should capture the attention of those who fancy more high-end handheld devices—the Legion Go 2. This version retains detachable controllers, including the unique, albeit questionable, mouse sensor which transforms the right control stick into a gaming mouse, albeit a somewhat awkward one. Some ergonomic improvements have been made, alongside adjustments like rounding the edges of the controllers and reimagining the D-pad into a circular form. Another standout feature is a significant battery upgrade from 49.2 WHr to a hefty 74 WHr.
The screen for this prototype keeps its size at 8.8 inches, but it’s now an OLED, which means better visuals with a 144 Hz refresh rate. Interestingly, Lenovo decided to reduce the resolution from 2560×1600 to 1920×1200, a smart move that aligns with more reasonable expectations. The screen also supports variable refresh rates and is rated at 500 nits of brightness. When this second-gen Legion Go finally arrives in 2025, it promises to pack a punch with a Ryzen Z2 chip, up to 2TB of storage, and blazing-fast 7500 MHz RAM maxing out at 32GB. While port options were still under wraps at the time of writing, the anticipation is definitely building.
Stay tuned for more updates as Lenovo continues to redefine gaming on the go!
