In August, GPD caught the attention of tech enthusiasts by announcing their latest innovation, the Pocket 4 mini laptop. Highlighted as the first handheld device to feature AMD’s cutting-edge Strix Point APUs, it piqued the interest of many. Recently, GPD Game Consoles revealed the pricing details on platform X. This unique device is priced at $895 for the entry-level model, boasting the AMD Zen 4-based Ryzen 7 8840U, while the top-tier version featuring the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, packed with 64GB of RAM and a 2TB storage, can set you back as much as $1,466.
Weighing just 770 grams, the GPD Pocket 4 mini isn’t just a handheld; it effortlessly morphs into a laptop or tablet. It comes equipped with a physical keyboard, touchscreen, and touchpad. This updated version taps into the power of AMD’s Zen 4 (Hawk Point) and Zen 5 (Strix Point) APUs tailored to fit various price levels. Aside from differing in APU and RAM/SSD capacities, most specifications remain consistent across the board. Expect to enjoy 7,500 MT/s memory speeds, a vibrant 8.8-inch 2.5K display running at 144 Hz with a stunning 97% DCI-P3 color range at 500 nits, along with modern connectivity options like Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, all underpinned by a 28W TDP.
The entry model of the GPD Pocket 4, offered at $895—or $829 during the IndieGoGo campaign—comes fully loaded with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB storage. It draws its muscle from AMD’s Radeon 7 8840U APU, sporting eight Zen 4 cores, alongside the Radeon 780M integrated GPU.
For a little more power, the Strix Point version steps things up with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 365. This variant, equipped with 10 Zen 5 cores and the Radeon 880M iGPU, retails at $1,157. It offers double the memory with 32GB of RAM and a generous 2TB SSD, catering well to those with heftier storage demands.
At the top of the line, the feature-packed Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 dazzles with 12 Zen 5 cores and AMD’s leading Radeon 890M iGPU. This premium configuration maxes out at 64GB of RAM and 2TB of onboard storage, all for a hefty price tag of $1,466. There’s also an option for a 4TB variant if storage is at the forefront of your needs.
In addition, GPD has rolled out some optional add-ons. For $20, you can snag an EIA RS-232 module, which is handy for connecting to older devices. Stay connected wherever you roam with a 4G LTE module priced at $125. It’s notable, however, that while an OCuLink port is not available, you’ll have to use USB4 if you plan on connecting an external GPU.
The release window for the Pocket 4 hasn’t been nailed down just yet. However, should the crowdfunding campaign proceed smoothly, there’s optimism we’ll see the first units by year-end.
A quick reminder: investing in a crowdfunding initiative doesn’t guarantee you’ll receive a final product. It’s more of a venture in support of an idea you believe in, rather than a straightforward retail purchase.
