The voice actors for the French version of Apex Legends have reportedly taken a stand against a contract clause that would have used their performances to train AI technology.
According to Pascale Chemin, who lends her voice to the character Wraith, a major publisher—likely Electronic Arts—tried to introduce this clause into their agreements. While the specific game and publisher weren’t directly named, all indications point to Apex Legends and EA being involved.
In solidarity, 31 additional actors from the project have also declined to sign and have communicated their refusal in a formal letter to the publisher.
“Our unity is crucial now more than ever,” Chemin expressed on Twitter, referencing how vital it is to have a protective clause for their voices in the contracts. This isn’t just about them, but is essential for all video game dubbing studios. “If we don’t succeed in this, we might never have this protection and it could mean disastrous consequences for our industry,” she elaborated, as shared in a translation on ResetEra.
Chemin acknowledges the dilemma, admitting that refusing work today seems impractical given the scarcity of jobs. She highlighted the financial struggles many actors face despite needing the income. However, it’s not just about getting paid. “What’s being asked is not just for us to do our jobs. It’s about surrendering our skills to train AI that could ultimately make us obsolete. We’re essentially being asked to undermine the very essence of our careers, to support a future where AI could replace us,” she explains passionately.
