Daredevil has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for a bit now, but his upcoming show might not delve deeply into his earlier appearances.
In 2021, Marvel thrilled fans by officially bringing Matt Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, into the MCU. He popped up again in “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” which was more on the comedic side compared to the serious tone of the Netflix “Daredevil” series, a tone that seems to be carrying into “Born Again.” Despite Marvel’s overarching strategy, showrunner Dario Scardapane hinted that Daredevil’s previous appearances might not play a crucial role in the new Disney Plus series. Speaking to SFX magazine, Scardapane mentioned, “Marvel has a master plan, and what you’re doing causes ripple effects. I would pitch stuff very early and I would hear that they had other plans.”
Scardapane added, “I have plenty of leeway up until I hit the larger-scale plan for the MCU. So I try to ignore some stuff from the wider universe. We establish a very specific Daredevil, both in terms of his dilemma, down to the suit and where we’re picking him up in his life. You can say that Daredevil is canon in the MCU, those other events in Spider-Man and She-Hulk happened, but some of them we are not leaning into. His one-night stand with She-Hulk may be one of those things.”
Many fans might be perfectly okay with this approach. Daredevil also seems to be getting a new love interest, Heather Glenn, played by Margarita Levieva. This situation showcases the challenges of navigating an interconnected universe. Perhaps Marvel could consider creating more spin-off projects to better handle such complexities?
Scardapane also noted that they’ve “moved Matt through other corners of the MCU, and now he’s back in his own story.” While he didn’t want to spill too many details, he hinted at the inclusion of a surprise character woven into the narrative in a natural way. With New York bustling with activity in the current MCU context, who this character could be is anyone’s guess. But fans won’t have to wait too long to find out, as the show is set to premiere on March 4 in the US and March 5 in the UK.
