Recently, a bunch of seemingly credible leaks about the Nintendo Switch 2’s final design made headlines, and the excitement reached a peak when Dbrand dropped a full 3D render out of the blue yesterday. This render features a Nintendo Switch 2 housed within a revamped Dbrand Killswitch carrying case, which was initially designed for handheld PCs but has now been tailored for the Switch 2. In a conversation with The Verge, Dbrand’s CEO, Adam Ijaz, explained that their portrayal is based on an actual 3D scan of the hardware, offering accurate dimensions of the Switch 2. With Joy-Cons attached, it measures around 270mm wide, or 200mm without, standing 116mm tall and 14mm thick.
The Nintendo Switch 2, as it appears, comes with an 8-inch screen, significantly larger than the 7.2-inch screen on the Switch OLED and the 6.2-inch on the original Switch. It introduces an additional “C” button, potentially for capturing, on the right Joy-Con, and features magnetically detachable Joy-Con controllers with a more ergonomic curve. The device incorporates top and bottom USB-C ports and a broad, U-shaped kickstand, much like the improved version on the Switch OLED.
With the anticipated Q1 2025 launch seemingly around the corner, this new design reflects a significant evolution from the Switch OLED. Although it may not feature an OLED screen, leaks suggest that the 8-inch display is a high-quality 1080p IPS LCD, which could potentially surpass the quality of the current Switch LCD.
Speaking of Dbrand’s Killswitch case design, it seems they’ve opted out of the usual upgraded kickstand or full-body enclosure typical of Killswitch cases, acknowledging the need to accommodate the Switch 2’s detachable Joy-Cons. Instead, their design splits the case into parts, held together with a striking teal bungee cord. Known for their reliable phone and handheld protective cases, Dbrand’s design is likely to succeed in capturing user interest.
While we’re eager for a more unmodified glimpse of the Nintendo Switch 2, it seems for now, we’ll have to rely on Dbrand’s leaked specs. These match a 3D-printed mock-up featured by the YouTube channel SwitchUp earlier this week, giving us a rough idea of what the bare device might look like.
The extensive leak from Dbrand, seemingly not restrained by a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), hints that Nintendo could soon announce and reveal the launch date for the Switch 2. Speculations have long hinted at a pre-2025 release, with Nintendo indicating that specific details should be out by March 2025. With the timeline shrinking, case makers like Dbrand are already gearing up for what could be Nintendo’s next big move in the handheld hybrid console arena.
