Since Christmas Eve, Ayaneo has been steadily unveiling more details about its upcoming Ayaneo 3 handheld device. The most exciting news so far is that this device will feature interchangeable control modules, paving the way for a new level of personalization in handheld gaming. This idea mirrors the design philosophy seen in the Victrix Pro BFG controller, but bringing this level of customization to a handheld device, complete with durable hall-effect sensors on the analog sticks and triggers, is a game-changer.
Ayaneo has been quite active on social media, sharing images and videos of the Ayaneo 3 on Twitter and Discord. In these updates, they showcase various angles and the interchangeable control modules of the device. Previously, back in November, we learned that the Ayaneo 3 would be available in two configurations: one with a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor and another with a Ryzen 7 8840U. Unfortunately, we are still waiting for details on pricing and additional technical specifications, beyond the inclusion of either an APU and the choice between LCD or OLED screens. More information should become available after the official launch event expected in late January 2025.
One of the standout features of the Ayaneo 3 is its swappable control modules. Not only can these modules be changed out, but they can also be inverted, and individual buttons can be rearranged according to user preference. This hyper-modular approach makes the Ayaneo 3 suitable for just about any game genre that works with a controller. For instance, fans of six-button fighting games like Street Fighter or those who enjoy classic Sega console games will likely appreciate the six-face-button module. Additionally, modules that incorporate a touchpad will be advantageous for experiences that are more desktop-oriented, and Steam Input will enhance this functionality.
While we still don’t have the pricing details, the Ayaneo 3 seems like it could be a flexible option, potentially appealing to budget-conscious gamers who may choose the Ryzen 7 8840U paired with a 7-inch LCD over the OLED model. However, we won’t truly know how those trade-offs stack up until we get the pricing information. With its unique focus on modular input controls, the Ayaneo 3 appears poised to compete well with other high-end handheld gaming devices expected to debut next year.
