Ubisoft, the renowned French publishing powerhouse, is reportedly working on a new battle royale game that aims to compete with Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, this new project, currently going by the codename Scout, bears a striking resemblance to Respawn and EA’s popular title. In fact, its artwork once even served as a thumbnail for Ubisoft’s project. There are also whispers of characters that seem very similar to those in Apex Legends. It’s clear that this game has been in development for a significant period.
The motive behind this project seems to be Ubisoft’s belief that they can attract players from Apex Legends. Recently, Apex Legends has experienced a downturn in revenue, as acknowledged by its publisher, Electronic Arts.
One insider mentioned, “I think they’re aiming to seize the moment with Apex seeing fewer players, thinking there’s an opportunity for another hero-style Battle Royale in the market.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s maiden voyage into free-to-play battle royale territory. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, which unfortunately didn’t last long, shutting down just 18 months later. Interestingly, this development comes on the heels of Ubisoft deciding to pull the plug on their free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, by late 2024.
As for Apex Legends, a fresh 2.0 version is reportedly in the pipeline, anticipated to make its debut sometime after April 2026.
