Today, Nintendo made a big announcement: they’ll start taking pre-orders for the Switch 2 in the U.S. on April 24. The pricing remains the same, with the base model at $449.99 and a special bundle that includes Mario Kart World for $499.99.
Initially, U.S. pre-orders were put on hold right after the console surfaced due to concerns over potential tariff impacts and shifting market dynamics. However, Nintendo has also decided to adjust the prices of some Switch 2 accessories. For example, the new pair of Joy-Con controllers, which were initially priced at $89.99, will now cost $94.99. Similarly, the Pro Controller sees a price hike from $79.99 to $84.99. This pattern follows through to items like the Switch 2 camera, dock set, wheel set, and charging grips, all becoming more expensive.
The company mentioned in their announcement that further price modifications for Nintendo products might occur in response to evolving market trends. Despite these hiccups, the system’s June 5 launch date remains unchanged.
Originally, pre-orders were slated for April 9, but a delay was necessary since the announcement coincided with a major trade decision by then-President Donald Trump. On that day, Trump declared a 90-day halt on several tariffs, except for those on Chinese products.
Luckily, the prices for Nintendo’s highly-anticipated games, Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Banaza (set for release on July 17), are not expected to rise. They will remain at $79.99 and $69.99, respectively.
Switch 2 boasts several upgrades over its predecessor, like a larger screen with HDR support, an additional USB Type-C port, and a beefier Nvidia graphics chip. The $449.99 price tag is noticeably steeper than the original Switch’s $299.99 launch price, causing some fans to request a price reduction on social media platforms.
Lastly, Nintendo included an apology for the postponement, expressing their hope that this action will ease some of their customers’ concerns as they navigate this transition period.
