Just recently, Baldur’s Village, a Stardew Valley mod featuring characters from Baldur’s Gate 3, found itself in hot water when it received a DMCA takedown from Wizards of the Coast, the owners of the Baldur’s Gate intellectual property. Fortunately, Wizards of the Coast quickly explained that the takedown was a mistake and worked to rectify the situation, allowing the mod to be reinstated.
This kerfuffle caught the attention of many, including the notable support from Larian Studios’ boss, Swen Vincke, who took to Twitter in defense of Baldur’s Village. In response to the drama, the modding team offered their own statement and updates on what’s next for the project.
“Our team has been actively engaging with this issue,” shared lead developer XunHe1145 on Twitter. “Last week’s copyright takedown of the Baldur’s Village mod from Nexus Mods was unexpected and left us, and many players, perplexed.”
XunHe1145 further reassured fans, saying, “The misunderstanding has been sorted out, and we’re grateful for the support from Larian Studios and the timely assistance from Nexus Mods. The professional manner in which Wizards of the Coast handled this helped resolve things peacefully. We deeply value the complexity and importance of intellectual property protection and are thankful our goals as creators and fans were recognized.”
Reflecting on the mod’s progress, they revealed: “Coincidentally, we’d just wrapped up Astarion’s Ten-heart event on the same day we received the takedown notice. At that moment, we feared the community might never get to enjoy this new content.”
Luckily, that fear has passed, and they confirmed: “We’re gearing up to release a minor update shortly. This will include bug fixes and Astarion’s Ten Hearts event, along with the continuation of future content updates as planned.”
Wrapping up their message, the team expressed heartfelt thanks to their community, saying, “We’re dedicated to enhancing the project with each update. It’s truly a gift to have such a supportive community. We won’t forget your support.”
As the mod is back for download, things seem to be looking up. Future installments promise exciting new content like a potential Halsin romance arc. Although it’s clear that the whole ordeal was stressful for the modders, the support from the community and quick resolution have allowed them to forge ahead.
