Samantha Béart, known for her role as Karlach in “Baldur’s Gate 3,” has recently shared her views on the growing use of generative AI in video game production. Béart didn’t hold back, stating that many CEOs are turning to AI simply as a cost-cutting measure.
The release of “Baldur’s Gate 3” in the latter half of 2023 was marked by a wave of acclaim, much of it directed at the incredibly talented human cast. Actors like Béart, Jennifer English as Shadowheart, and Neil Newbon as Astarion received high praise for their performances, which infused the characters with life and emotional depth throughout the game’s narrative.
In an interview with Edge, Béart argued that relying on AI could have long-term negative consequences for these companies, saying it could ruin reputations and businesses. She expressed skepticism about the industry’s willingness to bow to AI demands, asserting, “It’s not going to happen. Why sacrifice your career for it?” Béart emphasized the value of the artistic passion that fuels the industry versus a profit-driven approach from those outside the gaming world.
As debates about generative AI in gaming continue to rise, the technology itself advances, becoming more integrated into commercial applications. This trend has sparked concerns, such as those from Ashly Burch, the voice behind Aloy, who criticized leaked AI-powered versions of PlayStation characters. The divide between traditional and AI-driven game development is likely to widen as studios explore the technology.
Looking to the future, Béart has expressed a desire to reprise her role as Karlach, even if it means stepping away from Larian Studios. Given her stance on AI, any potential return would likely depend on the exclusion of AI from the project’s development process.
