After promising he’d make a return, he’s finally back. Over three decades since “Terminator 2” graced our screens, an indie developer has taken a trip back to the early ’90s to bring us “Terminator 2D: No Fate.” This side-scrolling action game draws inspiration from James Cameron’s renowned sequel.
Video games inspired by films can be a hit or miss, and they’re not as common as they once were. But one indie developer believes they’ve cracked the code with “Terminator 2D: No Fate.” This retro-style game seeks to capture the essence of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1991 blockbuster.
Bitmap Bureau, the team behind it, describes this creation as their homage to the arcade hits of the ’80s and ’90s. They feel it’s the T2 game they longed for in their youth—and based on the trailer, it seems they might be right.
Not to dismiss the earlier Terminator 2 games completely; Bethesda’s “The Terminator” took up a considerable chunk of our time back in the day. But the officially licensed T2 games often sped through the movie’s narrative without pausing for the excitement.
Bitmap Bureau is taking a different approach by recreating every scene from the film. They’ve infused the classic 90s arcade look with modern PC power, and that iconic truck chase is nothing short of amazing.
Perhaps one of the game’s most captivating features is its promise of multiple endings. The original movie had two different conclusions, depending on which version you watched. We’re crossing our fingers for a reality-twisting scenario where John Connor meets a surprising fate in molten iron.
Though we’ll need a bit of patience, as “Terminator 2D: No Fate” is set to launch on September 5th. If you’re itching for some robot-themed action in the meantime, check out our top robot games and the best indie treasures out there.
